Back in 1993 a couple of Elvis fanatics in Parkes decided to hold an Elvis Party. This turned into a revival celebration on the King’s birthday, and the Parkes Elvis Festival was born. It went from attracting a few hundred, to thousands with people coming from overseas to attend, and there were for real Japanese Elvis impersonators!
I was not prepared for the scale of the event. Locals had warned me to do my grocery shopping the week before, and don’t even try to go to McDonalds during Elvis week. A day before the festival kicked off I started seeing Elvis in strange places, in traffic, shopping for Aldi specials, driving police cars, providing customer service at the bank. All the rockabillies came out of their closets for a week, and it was spectacular.
