I found some pictures on instagram of Cathedral Rocks at Kiama, and thought to myself how is it that we have not been there? We’ve been to Kiama many times and didn’t even know this rocks existed.
Located three kilometres north of the centre of Kiama at the southern end of Jones Beach, this distinctive rock formation is part of a geologically fascinating coastline, and according to the little plaque we found at the next beach down the spot has been luring sightseers since 1890.
The rock formation being volcanic is extremely hard and it doesn’t erode as fast as other rocks by the sea would, so it has become kind of a sculptural formation. If you are going to go see them, I would suggest you go at low tide and approach them from the north. This will allow you to get fairly close to them and see the cave facing the rocks as well. The cave, in my kids opinion, was the most exciting part of the day.
